SNAP
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
What is SNAP?
SNAP serves as the first line of defense against hunger. It enables income eligible families to buy nutritious food with an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, called “Access Oklahoma.” The Access Oklahoma card works like a debit card. Benefits are automatically loaded monthly for participating households to buy eligible food from authorized retailers.
Who should apply for SNAP?
Households who have experienced recent changes may be eligible to receive benefits. Changes include:
Household income
Number of people in the household
Job Status
Undocumented parent/guardians of children born in the United States can apply for SNAP on behalf of their children. However, benefits will only be calculated based on the number of individuals/children who qualify for SNAP benefits. Applying for SNAP on behalf of documented children does not impact immigration status.
What is SNAP’s income limit?
Only OKDHS can determine if someone can qualify for benefits. This is important if anyone in a household is over the age of 60 or disabled. Here is a link to current SNAP income eligibility limits table.
Common FAQ’s
-
Typically a SNAP application takes 20 minutes or less.
-
In most cases, once a client submits an application, their state agency or local SNAP office will process it with 30 days. Some situations may be eligible for 7 day processing. During the processing time, the client will need to complete and eligibility interview and give proof (documentation) of the information they provide. The interview is typically completed over the telephone or in person. A notice will then be sent in the mail telling them whether or not they are eligible. If the client is found eligible, they will receive benefits based on the date they submitted their application.

SNAP benefits can be used at any retailer that accepts SNAP. These mostly include grocery stores, big-box stores, convenient stores, and in some areas, farmers markets. Here a link to a list of retailers that accept SNAP: fns.usda.gov/snap/retailer-locator
